early to judge. we don't know whether -- the republicans are parading through here at cnn today, they're all saying how hyper partisan he now feels to them. the country doesn't see that. he has a lot of people, as vin will tell you, a lot of people rallying, love what he's doing. >> it's remarkable too, because remember the line that was so memorable that brought -- rocketed barack obama to the forefront of the american consciousness was his 2004 speech at the democratic national convention, that there are no red states no blue states, this is the united states of america. when you think of his inaugural address, there wasn't one line that crystallized or captured the nation. from a republican perspective it would be wonderful to hear some sort of harkening of tone, some kind of outreach or olive branch to the right and unifying the country. >> at that point, remember, there was this huge fiscal crisis he was facing so he won on all this hope, and then he gets into the job and remember, he really started before he started. and he was dealing with that terrible fiscal crisis so his ina

jump in the death toll from the nightclub blaze in santa maria, in brazil. officials telling cnn that 220 people are dead. 220. that is up from the 90 that we were originally told. this is among the deadliest fires of this type in history. it was ten years ago that 100 people were killed in the station nightclub fire in rhode island. this fire today in brazil, more than twice the size of the fire in rhode island. the cause of this fire, still under investigation. but reports say pyrotechnics may have caught some of the club's sound proofing on fire. in these kinds of disasters, people are more often killed by being trampled or by the smoke than by fire itself. we continue to watch these live pictures of this scene there. we will get some more information and a live report from brazil in just a few moments from now. >>> and back here at home, an ice storm making its way through the midwest. a major storm pushing through the plains into the great lakes, leaving as much as a half an inch of ice on roads, trees, power lines, heavy snow is also possible. i'm joined by samantha moore.

the president can take without having to wait for any congressional action. let's bring in our cnn white house correspondent brianna keilar. she's working the story for us. what are you hearing? >> reporter: wolf, i'm told that there is very much a sense in this meeting between vice president joe biden and advocates of gun control as well as those who have suffered gun violence themselves or lost loved ones to it that there was actually very much a sense that this was an opportunity to do something and they believe they have a bit of, i guess you could say, a mandate to do something because of poll numbers showing the public opinion has shifted in this. the news that the vice president made today was that the white house is looking to go it alone, at least in some ways as it chooses to tackle this problem. go it alone without congress' help and observers of this debate, as you know, have said that this is definitely a possibility but biden today confirmed that it's something the white house is pursing. here's what he said. >> i want to make it clear that we are not going to get caught up in th

situation room." >>> and the breaking news continues here in cnn. we're covering the country's latest multiple shooting incident on a college campus. three people, at least two of them were students caught in a cross fire. a fourth person suffered a heart attack during the shooting. it all happened near houston, texas, on the north harris campus of lone star college. that's a community college in texas. cnn's ed lavandera has the latest. ed, what are you hearing? >> reporter: this shooting appears to be a situation that started off as an altercation in one of the buildings between two people. one of those firing shots was wounded and is now in custody. two people were caught in the crossfire and those people were wounded and then there was a fourth person that in all of this may lay had a heart attack. that person is being treated as well. and now the focus is on the second shooter, the second person in the altercation. that person fled the campus itself. the officials say that everything is safe and secure now on the campus but the search for that second suspect is the main concern a

with spending cuts. let's go live to cnn white house correspondent brianna keilar. >> reporter: president obama stating very clearly today that he will not negotiate deficit reduction, tax increases and spending cuts attached to the debt ceiling. this of course does follow that bruising battle the year before last, where he did negotiate on the issue, and the u.s. nearly went to the brink of default. he said that congress has to pay the bills that it's already racked up. >> you don't go out to dinner and then, you know, eat all you want and then leave without paying the check. and if you do, you're breaking the law. and congress should think about it the same way that the american people do. you don't -- now, if congress want, to have a debate about maybe we shouldn't go out to dinner next time, maybe we should go to a more modest restaurant, that's fine. that's the debate that we should have. >> reporter: in this press conference that was called last minute in the east room, president obama said he will negotiate a deal on deficit reduction but not, as he put it, quote, with a gun to the head

sponsorship money and may be ready to testify against others. cnn's ed lavandera is live in austin, texas. ed, what do we know about this confession? >> i think the million-dollar question is to what extent lance armstrong apologizes and what will that sound like? will he apologize or admit to using steroids throughout all of his cycling career? i mean to what level will this be done? more importantly, just how he will say it. not many details other than beyond that headline, that according to media reports lance armstrong will admit to using steroids in his interview with oprah winfrey. not much coming from oprah winfrey as well. shortly after wrapping up the interview here in austin, texas, oprah sent out a brief tweet. just wrapped with lance armstrong more than 2 1/2 hours and he came ready. she wrote "ready" in all caps. if past interviews are any indication, lance armstrong, you knowing has over the years, john, been a very tough interview, very steadfast, so it will be very interesting to see how his tone and attitude changes now if he has to be a lot more forthright and contrite. we'l
